A grill, is a front of gold which become one of the type of jewelries that worn over the teeth. Grills are made from metal and it removable. In hip hop culture, the artists wore this kind of jewelry since 1980s, but they became widely popular during the mid-2000s due to the rise of Dirty South rap, and it mostly common in USA only. Before mouth grills were all the rage, one or two simple gold teeth were the look of choice for rappers and hip hop artists. People live Public Enemy’s Flava Flav really brought gold teeth out into the forefront. Then in the 1990’s, a new look began to emerge. More and more artists were showing off entire rows of gold that stretched across the whole front of their mouths.

The famous rapper Nelly made grills even more famous when he performed his smash hit single “Grillz” which was released in 2005. Ever since, the trend has increased in numbers. Another famous artist who is proud of his grill is Paul Wall. Not only does he show off his wild grills, he also owns his own jewelry store in Texas where he makes them for other people by hand.

Grills are made of several types of metal, often silver, gold, or platinum that is sometimes inlaid with precious stones; they are generally removable, though some may be permanently attached to the teeth. Grills can cost anywhere from one hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on the materials used and the number of teeth covered.

According to the American Dental Association in June 2006, no studies have shown whether the long-term wearing of grills is safe. If the grills fit properly and are worn only intermittently, wearers are at a low risk for dental problems, according the ADA.
