It’s Precious Beryl

Beryl Stone

Beryl

Beryl is the mineral name of several important gemstones. All transparent varieties of Beryl may be used as gemstones, although Emerald and Aquamarine are by far the most well-known and important varieties.

The name seems to have derived from the ancient Greek word ‘beryllos’ which means ‘precious blue green ‘color’. Beryl is found in many places including Colombia, Africa, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan and California.

Beryl is often referred to as the mother of all gemstones. Beryl in its purest form is colorless. However, impurities in beryl gives it many colors. There are six well known types of beryl. The six different types or varieties of beryl include aquamarine, bixbite, emerald, goshenite, heliodor and morganite.

Aquamarine is a light bluish green form of beryl. The name of this stone is derived from the Latin word ‘Aqua” which means water and ‘mare’ which means sea.The color of this stone is as a result of the iron content in the stone.

Bixbite is the red form of beryl. It is an extremely rare gemstone and Utah is the only place where bixite can be found. This stone is named after Maynard Bixby who discovered this stone in the year 1904. The red color of this stone is as a result of the manganese content in the stone.

Emerald is the most famous of all beryls and is green in color. The name of this stone is derived from the Greek word ‘ smargus’ which means green gemstone. The green color of this stone is because of the chromium and iron content in the stone.

Goshenite is a form of beryl that does not have any color. This stone is named after ‘Goshen’ in the US, the place where it was found first.

Heliodor is known as the yellow from of beryl. This stone name is derived from the Greek words ‘helios’ and ‘doros’ which means gift from the Sun.The yellow color is due to the iron content in the stone.

Morganite is known as the pink form of beryl. The color of the stone is due to manganese and iron content in stone. Morganite got its name from the American Banker J.P. Morgan.

Legend says that Beryl was used to ward off demons and evil spirits. Ancient literature notes that Pliny used powdered beryl to cure eye injuries. It is said to protect travelers from danger and to treat disorders of the heart and spine.

Other legends about Beryl indicate it was used to promote cheerfulness and marital love, to retard laziness, and maintain youthfulness. Golden beryl is said to make one sympathetic and increase sincerity.

Aventurine The Stone

Aventurine Stone

Aventurine Stone

Aventurine is composed of two gem minerals, one is a plagioclase feldspar and the other is quartz . Both have a sparkling reflection from oriented minute inclusions of mica or hematite, which cause a slight metallic iridescence.

The most common colour of aventurine is green, but it may also be orange, brown, yellow, blue, or gray. Aventurine is found in India, Chile, Spain, Russia, Brazil, Austria, and Tanzania. It is a 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Aventurine has been confused with amazonite and jade. Dark green Aventurine generally has inclusions (due to green fuchsite mica and perhaps a bit of pyrite) which creates a speckled appearance. This is an easy identifying factor often called aventurescence.

It is interesting that the name for the stone is derived from an accident. Sometime during the 18th century, Venetian glass workers were preparing molten glass when copper filings accidentally fell into the batch producing a glass with sparkles. The name aventurine comes from the Italian “a ventura,” which means”by chance”.

For many centuries aventurine is used for jewelry, candelabra, girandoles, pipes, vases and bowls (sometimes very large), and for other ornamental objects. Unique ancient vase made of bright aventurine is displayed in Hermitage, art museum in St. Petersburg (Russia).

Obsidian Stone

Obsidian Stone

Obsidian Stone

Obsidian is a natural glass of volcanic origin that is formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava. Obsidian is extremely rich in silica (about 35 to 80 percent) and is low in water. Obsidian is made of the same minerals as granite but cooled so quickly that they do not have time to crystallize.
Obsidian has a glassy lustre and is slightly harder than window glass. Though obsidian is typically jet-black in color, the presence of hematite produces red and brown varieties, and the inclusion of tiny gas bubbles may create a golden sheen. Obsidian in attractive and variegated colors is used as a semiprecious stone.

Obsidian was discovered by Obsius in Ethiopia, obsidian is named after him. Obsidian is usually black. Other colors include: brown, gray, red, blue and green, clear, orange, yellow.

Obsidian has been used for thousands of years for toolmaking. In 1967 archaeologists working at the site of Tlapacoya, southeast of Mexico City, uncovered a well-made blade of obsidian associated with a radiocarbon date of about 21,000 BC.

Pure obsidian is usually dark in appearance, though the color varies depending on the presence of impurities. Iron and magnesium typically give the obsidian a dark green to brown to black color. A very few samples are nearly colorless. In some stones, the inclusion of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern (snowflake obsidian).

Snowflake Obsidian is a stone of purity. It balances mind body and spirit. The blackness of this stone enhances the ability to reach your inner self. It is one of the earliest known stones to be used for scrying (seeing into the future).

This is a stone of Honesty, Sincerity and Truth, Obsidian will bring out the Warrior spirit in you. It can help reach into your subconscious, reclaim yourself, and help you find or re-discover forgotten abilities within yourself.

Green Obsidian is particularly useful to finding release from people who try to “hook you ” or draw you into their personal crises, and redirects their pulling, draining energy to the unlimited field of White Light, giving them access to their own healing, without needing to draw energy from you.

The Green Magical Jade

Jade Stone

Jade

Jade is an ornamental stone. The term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks that are made up of different silicate minerals, Nephrite and Jadeite.

Jadeite is almost never found in individual crystals and is composed of microscopic interlocking crystals that produce a very tough material. Nephrite is actually not a mineral, but a variety of the mineral actinolite. The nephrite variety is composed of fibrous crystals inter-twinned in a tough compact mass. Other actinolite varieties are quite different from nephrite.

The toughness of jade is remarkable. It has a strength greater than steel and was put to work by many early civilizations for axes, knives and weapons. It was later that jade became a symbolic stone used in ornaments and other religious artifacts during the eons.

Today jade is still valued for its beauty. Its many colors are appreciated, but its the emerald green color that jadeite produces so well, that is highly sought after by artwork collectors. This emerald green jade called “Imperial Jade” is colored by chromium. Other colors are influenced by iron (green and brown) and manganese is thought to produce the violet colors. Nephrite is usually only green and creamy white, while jadeite can have the full range of jade’s colors.

Jade is an ancient stone that has historically been used to attract love. Carved into a butterfly, in China it is a powerful symbol used to draw love.

Jade can be used to bring money into your life. Create a positive attitude towards money and visualize yourself using money creatively and productively while holding the stone in your power hand. When making an important business decision, use the prosperous energies of jade by holding it while contemplating your course of action. Jade strengthens your mental faculties and assists in clear reasoning.

The soothing green color of jade makes it a wonderful healing stone. It helps the body in self-healing while working through underlying, non-physical reasons for a precipitation for disease. It is particularly helpful for kidney, heart and stomach complaints.

Amber, A Good Luck Stone

Amber Stone

Amber

Amber is an Organic Gemstone. It is actually a naturally occurring hard and translucent fossilized resin found in some ancient trees. The resin must be several million years old to be called amber. Amber is found in a variety of colors and hues including the black, golden yellow, orange, milky white, reddish orange, green, violet or brownish yellow. Though Amber is considered a gemstone it is technically not a Gemstone or mineral. Amber is said to derive its name from Middle English amber or from Medieval Latin ambra or from Arabic anbar ambergris.

The Greeks and Romans used amber extensively in their jewelry and crafts. It is said to have been in existence even in the Stone Age and is one of the oldest found stones. The history of amber can be traced back to ancient times. Amber was also used to make varnish and incense. Amber is found in several places including Germany, Sicily, England, Myanmar and Mexico.

Amber deposits have been found that range between 360 and one million years old and belong between the Carboniferous and Pleistocene geological periods. As sticky resin oozed from ancient pine trees, small insects, plant material, feathers and other small objects in the path of the flow became entrapped. Over time, the resin was encased in dirt and debris and through a process of heat and pressure it fossilized to become amber.

Amber increases in value with the rarity and perfection of the entrapped object. Complete insect specimens are rare though and command top price.

Amber is very soft, between 2 1/2-3 on the Mohs scale and can be scratched easily. Bracelets and rings with amber cabochons should be worn with care to prevent marring the stone. Much of the amber used in commercial jewelry is actually reconstituted which makes it harder and less prone to scratching. Reconstituted and processed amber usually doesn’t have natural inclusions.

Amber gemstone was believed to possess magical power, since it was warm to touch, light weight, produced static electricity when rubbed and smelled sweet when heated. Wearing amber as an amulet was highly recommended to safeguard the wearer from evil and from negative energy. It suits well for those born under the Zodiacs Signs Leo, Virgo and Capricorn. It is said to protect health and reduce goiter. It is used to treat eye disorders, glandular swellings of the throat and lungs, teeth disorders, bronchial disorders, headache, rheumatic pains, stress, cold and jaundice. Amber gem stone balances endocrine and digestive system. It relieves stomach pain and improves liver and kidney functioning. Amber is said to enhance decision making, memory, luck and strength.
